Childhood Obesity

AIM: To support boroughs and partners to implement a whole systems approach to reducing childhood obesity in London.

ADPH London host the London Obesity Leads Network and the London Obesity Delivery Board jointly, with OHID London and implement pan-London actions

Healthy Child Weight

In Jun-20, ADPH London partnered with OHID London, the GLA, and NHS London, to deliver The Whole Systems Children’s Healthy Weight Webinar.  This was to inspire and encourage a whole systems approach, to promoting healthier weight for London’s children.

This webinar event was targeted at NHS, public health, local authority, and academic leaders.  It was a valuable opportunity to share learning across London, and help colleagues progress this agenda within local systems.

The session included:

  • Lambeth and LEAP’s experience of promoting healthier weight
  • Birmingham’s journey to becoming a Healthy Food City
  • Best Practice example: The SuperZones project
  • Best Practice example: Quad’s Child Weight Management Services
  • Introducing London’s Every Child a Healthy Weight Delivery Plan

London Child Obesity Taskforce

The Taskforce’s vision is that every child in London grows up in a community and an environment that supports their health and weight.

  • Purpose – To bring about a transformation in London, so every child has every chance to grow up eating healthily, drinking plenty of water and, being physically active.
  • Commitment by 2030, to halve the percentage of London’s children, who are overweight at the start of primary school and obese at the end of primary school, and to reduce the gap in childhood obesity rates between the richest and poorest areas in London.

Sector Led Improvement (SLI)

In early 2016, ADPH London began a sector led improvement project with the Directors of Public Health. The aims of the project were to identify local improvement actions for all Local Authorities and to identify joint actions for common issues across London.

A thematic review was produced and recommendations have informed the development of an implementation plan which the London Childhood Obesity Delivery Board delivered on.
