ADPH responds to delayed Public Health Grant allocations

With only weeks until the new financial year, these delays once again will make it harder for councils to plan high quality services that provide value for money and protect the communities they serve

Professor Jim McManus
ADPH President

Speaking to the BMJ about the potential harms to public health services caused by delays to the public health grant announcement, ADPH President, Prof. Jim McManus said:

“Directors of Public Health are deeply concerned that yet again the Department of Health and Social Care has still to confirm local government public health grant allocations for 2023/24.

“Delays in announcements harm people. These budgets fund local services and leadership that protect and improve public health each day, covering areas such as sexual and reproductive health, drug and alcohol treatment, stop smoking services and early years support.

“With only weeks until the new financial year, these delays once again will make it harder for councils to plan high quality services that provide value for money and protect the communities they serve. If government wants a sustainable NHS, it needs to show this by valuing sustainable public health.”
